Family Portrait Session FAQs
-
The best family portrait photographer is someone whose style you love and who helps your family feel comfortable throughout the experience.
For nearly 20 years, Photo Jane Studios has created timeless family portraits for families throughout Harford County. Every session is thoughtfully planned so you can simply enjoy the experience while I guide you through every step, from planning your clothing to designing artwork for your home.

Every family is different, so your total investment depends on the portrait experience you choose and the artwork you’d like to enjoy afterward.
Your Family Portrait Experience stars at $690 and includes a $500 portrait credit, which can cover a small portrait package or be applied toward any artwork or collection you choose.
During your complimentary planning consultation, I’ll explain the options, answer your questions, and help you choose the experience and artwork that best fit your family, your home, and your budget.

Family portrait sessions can take place in my Forest Hill studio, at the beautiful park just across the street, or, if you're located nearby, at your home.
During your planning consultation, we'll choose the location that best fits your family's style and the look you'd like for your portraits.
-
Your complimentary planning consultation is designed to make preparing for your family portraits easy and enjoyable.
If you choose in-home planning, I'll help you select clothing for your portrait session, learn about your personal style, and consider your home's colors and décor so we can create portraits that will complement your space beautifully.
I'll also photograph areas of your home where you may enjoy displaying your portraits. At your ordering appointment, I can show you what your actual portraits will look like on your own walls, allowing you to see different images, sizes, and arrangements before deciding what you love best.
In-home planning is completely optional. We can also plan together at the studio, by phone, or by video call. Either way, you'll receive personal guidance throughout the entire experience.
-
Yes, in most cases. Complimentary local delivery and installation is available when the location and installation placement allow.
If you'd prefer to install your portraits yourself, I am happy to simply deliver them to your home. We'll discuss your plans ahead of time so you'll know exactly what to expect when your finished artwork is ready.

decide whether you want to match or coordinate
Some families genuinely love a matching look, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Everyone might wear white shirts with jeans, khakis, or dark pants, or perhaps everyone wears the same general color on top. If that feels like your family, matching can create a clean, unified portrait.
Other families prefer clothing that coordinates without being identical. One of the easiest ways to create that look is to begin with the outfit containing the most colors, often a dress or patterned piece, and build everyone else’s clothing from its color palette. If that outfit contains pink, blue, yellow, and green, for example, other family members can wear pieces featuring those colors. The result feels connected without everyone looking exactly alike.
It can also help to lay everyone’s complete outfits together before the session. If the clothing looks harmonious together there, there’s a good chance it will photograph well together too.
During your consultation, we'll go over your clothing choices, color palettes, and overall styling so everyone feels confident and completely prepared for your session.

Absolutely.
In addition to your full family portrait, we'll create a variety of images that may include parents together, siblings, grandparents with grandchildren, individual children, and each immediate family, depending on the people attending your session and the time available.
These additional portraits often become some of the family's favorites.
-
Most family portrait sessions last about an hour, although the exact length depends on the size of your family, the ages of your children, and the variety of portraits you'd like to create.
I never rush your session. I'll guide you through everything at a comfortable pace so everyone can relax and enjoy the experience.
-
Children don't need to sit perfectly still or smile on command to create beautiful portraits. I work with children at their own pace, creating a fun, relaxed environment that allows genuine expressions and natural interactions to shine through.
Some of the best portraits happen in the moments between the poses.

Well-behaved dogs are welcome to be part of your family portrait session. Please let me know during your consultation if you'd like to include your dog so we can plan accordingly.

your reveal/ordering appointment begins with a fun, short slideshow presentation featuring many of your portraits.

Once your order has been finalized, your artwork is carefully prepared by my professional lab partners.
Digital images are typically delivered within 2-5 business days after final retouching. Printed artwork, albums, and wall art generally require additional production time of a few weeks before they're ready for pickup or delivery.
I'll keep you updated throughout the process so you'll always know what to expect.

No. There may never be a perfect time. Children continue to grow, families change, and every year becomes part of your family's story. The best time for family portraits is while you're together, just as you are today.
Years from now, you'll be grateful you decided not to wait.
