How to Choose the Right Portrait Photographer in Harford County
Choosing a portrait photographer can feel overwhelming. So how do you know which photographer is right for you? After 20 years of owning my portrait studio, I’ve learned that the answer isn’t simply finding the photographer whose pictures you like best. You’re choosing both the photographs and the experience that creates them.
Start with the photography itself Look through more than a photographer’s favorite few images on social media. Spend some time with their website and complete galleries if they’re available. Do you consistently like what you see? Pay attention to expressions, posing, lighting, retouching, and the way people are photographed. Some photographers create candid, lifestyle-oriented images. Others specialize in carefully crafted portraits. Some work primarily outdoors with natural light, while others offer studio photography or a combination of both. There isn’t one correct approach. The important question is whether their work looks like something you would want hanging in your home or representing you professionally. If scheduling flexibility matters to you, also consider whether the photographer has a studio. Outdoor locations can be beautiful, but weather doesn’t always cooperate. A photographer with both studio and outdoor options may be able to offer more flexibility when rain, extreme heat, cold, or other conditions interfere with the original plan. A studio can be especially helpful when your session needs to happen on a particular date, such as when family members are visiting from out of town.
Consider how much guidance you want This is one of the biggest differences between photographers, and it’s something people don’t always realize until after they’ve booked. Some photographers provide a date and location and leave most of the preparation to you. Others offer a much more guided experience. Before booking, find out what kind of help you’ll receive. Will your photographer help you choose clothing? Will they discuss locations and the overall look you want? Will they guide you with posing and expression during the session? Is professional hair and makeup available if you want it? If you’re someone who says, “I’m not photogenic” or “I never know what to do in front of a camera,” the amount of guidance a photographer provides may matter every bit as much as their photographic style. A skilled photographer shouldn’t expect you to arrive knowing how to pose. That’s our job. One photographer’s session price may include a collection of digital files. Another may charge separately for the session and the photographs you choose afterward. None of these approaches is inherently better than another, but you should understand the complete process before booking. Ask what the session fee includes, whether there is a minimum purchase, how photographs are selected, whether digital images are included with purchased artwork, and what finished products are available. That makes it much easier to compare photographers based on what you actually want rather than comparing two session fees that may represent completely different services.
Think about what you want to end up with when it’s over This is one of my favorite questions to ask clients: What do you want these photographs to become? Maybe you simply need an excellent professional headshot. Maybe you’re photographing your high school senior and want an album that tells the story of who they were at seventeen. Maybe your family hasn’t been professionally photographed in ten years and you finally want a beautiful portrait on the wall. Or perhaps you know you want photographs but haven’t thought any further than that. That’s okay, too. The right photographer should be able to help you think through those choices rather than expecting you to know everything before you walk through the door.
Look for the photographers experience and professional preparedness Years in business aren’t the only measure of a good photographer, but experience can matter, especially when something doesn’t go according to plan. Children have bad days. Weather changes. Someone feels uncomfortable in front of the camera. Clothing doesn’t photograph quite the way everyone expected. Glasses glare. Hair moves. Expressions disappear the second a camera comes up. An experienced photographer has encountered these things before and knows how to adjust. Also consider the photographer’s particular experience with the kind of photography you need. Photographing a corporate headshot, a family with small children, and a high school senior are very different assignments. Experience also includes how a photographer runs their business. If timing is important, perhaps because family members are visiting from out of town or you need photographs by a particular date, ask about availability and turnaround times. Find out how far in advance sessions are scheduled and what happens if weather, illness, or an equipment problem interferes with the original plan. Professional photographers should also be prepared for things their clients never need to think about. Cameras and lighting equipment can fail. Files need to be safely stored and backed up. Weather can change plans. A photographer’s preparation and business practices can be just as important as what happens while the camera is in their hands.
Pay attention to how you feel when you talk with the photographer Beautiful photography matters, but so does trust. You are allowing another person to photograph you and the people you care about. You should feel comfortable asking questions and explaining what you like, what you don’t like, and what makes you nervous. A consultation, whether it’s in person, over the phone, or by video, is an opportunity to find out whether the photographer listens to you and whether their process feels like a good fit. You don’t have to choose the photographer everyone else chooses. You need to choose the photographer who feels right for you.
